Be careful, most of this stretch of Telegraph Road is NOT located in Sylvan Lake.
The speed increases from 40 to 50 mph in only 0.5 miles and most drives appear to go between 50 and 55 all along this stretch (that seems to be the natural flow of traffic). I am currently requesting the PA 85 Engineering Survey for this area. I have been told unofficially that a survey has been completed and speeds should actually be posted as 50 or 55 but that just hasn't been made official. If no survey exists, the speed limit should be 55 mph by default. Either way, the posted speeds are artificially low.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, be sure that you document if the Sylvan Lake officer who pulls you over is actually sitting outside of Sylvan Lake zoning boundaries (most of this section of Telegraph is located in the City of Pontiac, check a map). If he is, and you are on a sectino of Telegraph that is not in Sylvan Lake, then the ticket MAY be invalid - if the ticket states that the offense took place WITHIN the city of Sylvan Lake. These officers may not realize it but they are not within their jurisdiction and the tickets they are writing may in fact be invalid. For them to write tickets outside of Sylvan Lake, they must first observe an alleged offense taking place within Sylvan Lake. Only then (according to my research of Michigan law) can they follow someone out of Sylvan Lake to apprehend them.
I am sure that most people simply pay their tickets and assume that everything is valid. In this case, that may very well not be the case!
