Maple Street near 12th Street
This part of Maple Street runs north and south. The 12th Street intersection lies at the bottom of two steep hills, creating blind spot for motorists traveling on Maple Street from either the north or south. Although there is a school on 12th Street about 1/4 mile west of the intersection, this intersection has been declared a permanent school zone (fines are doubled). The speed limit on the south side of the intersection is 40mph, but drops to 25mph on the north side of the intersection, forcing motorists driving north on Maple Street to brake hard against the downhill slope to sufficiently reduce their speed. Similarly, motorists driving south must ride their brakes against the steep hill in order to stay under 25mph. City police often park out of sight on 12th Street and clock motorists, particularly in the morning and afternoon. They have been known to issue tickets for 1-3 mph over-the-limit violations.
