State Highway 79 near State Highway 36
The Milam County Constable’s office has taken it upon themselves to enforce the speed limits in this area, knowing that people are going to exceed the limit because of the limitations of Hwy 36 prior to driving into Milano. Hwy 36 is a one lane highway and it is very common for head-on collissions. When entering Milano there is a short 2 mile stretch of 4 lane traffic posted at 50 mph. One will drive for miles behind someone driving 50 in a 70 mph zone. Milano is an opportunity to get passed a slow driver. The Constables office has purchased a radar gun and many, many lights for the Constables surburban. I drive the speed limits and believe they are necessary. Unfortunately, I followed an erratic driver for miles traveling on Hwy 36. Upon entering the Milano exchange, I stopped at the red light and witnessed the eratic driver enter through the red light into the middle of the intersection and stop. At that point, I determined the driver must be drunk. When the light turned green I accelerated at a faster than normal pace and passed this individual. After passing him he sped up and attempted to ram me about the time we passsed the Constable who sets up between the red lights where someone would achieve peak speed. After passing this individual, I slowed down to the posted speed limit and the drunk passed me(weaving). About that time the Constable pulled out with lights going(you’ve never seen so many lights). As we pulled up to the next light, the drunk and I both had our right blinker to continue onto Hwy 36. At the last second the drunk weaved away from turning right and continued to the light traveling down Hwy 79. I made the right turn and the Constable followed me. I told the Constable that I may have exceeded the speed limit attempting to get away from this drunk and asked him if he saw the eratic driving. He stated that he saw the eratic driving of this individual but it did not legitimize my exceeding the speed limit. He says that I was driving 70 but I think he actually lasered the drunk. I have no choice but to take defensive driving because of the cost involved. I have no other speeding violations on my driving record. The last time I received a citation was 16 years ago. This roadway is a commonly used area in accessing Texas A&M university and the Houston area. Be very wary through here, because the Constable’s office is out in force. Be very wary after the light going south on Hwy 36 because the 50 mph speed limit last for another 3/4 to a mile after the light. He exploits that area as well. By the way when I called the Constable to complain about getting stopped and a drunk being allowed to continue, the first thing the Constable did was apologize for the rude treatment I may have received from his deputy. I didn’t even say anything about his deputy’s rude treatement. It is pretty revealing that he has to do this up front especially when I didn’t complain about the rude deputy. By the way the deputy is very rude! I used to stop in Milano and purchase gas, get a snack etc.. I will not be stopping and spending my money there locally in the future. I travel this raadway about 3 times a month or more.
