State Highway 24/40
City police sit in an empty lot at the "big curve" on hwy 24/40 at Smiley Road. Speed limit goes from 50 to 40 to 30 in a very short distance. I live nearby and have been pulled over twice recently, once for a burned out light and once for going 8 mph over.

This is in open view. One should not drive 8 over the posted limit.
This is not a speed trap i lived in tonganoxie my entire life. There is alot of distance between the speed limit as it lowers. The state KDOT placed larger than normal size signs posting the speed limt. Tongie cops don't pull people over for 8 mph over. Maybe a state trooper. If you did get pulled over it not because it wasa speed trap you were going to fast to see the speed limit signs. slow down and you won;t get stopped.
I agree that the signs are visible and that locals know about the speed reduction. But that knowledge doesn't negate the fact that this is a complete speed trap... especially to non-locals. To me a speed trap is simply a place that officers tend to park with radar guns because they know they stand a better chance of meeting their ticket quotas. They are often found near areas where the speed limit changes. In fact, this particular stretch of 24/40 has a great vantage point for cops to catch people speeding at two separate sections of the speed trap... where it goes from 50 to 40 and then from 40 to 30. In this case, one cop has twice the opportunities to give speeding tickets. Wake up folks, taxes are low in this state. Kansas has to make money somehow. The current administration prefers to replace slightly higher taxes with crime revenue.
