I-5 Milepost 107 North through Tacoma
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) has been using laser speed traps along the I-5 corridor between Lacey and Tacoma for about 6 months now. The WSP has acquired a number of BMW bikes and they constantly lurk behind bridge abutments, just over the crests of hills, or at the end of on-ramps. These bikes are very hard to spot as they are black, look more like race bikes and the Troopers use a full-face all-black or white helmet and full leather riding gear. There are a few cars mixed in with the bikes and they typically are unmarked Dodge Intrepids, Chevy Tahoe’s, a Grand Am and Crown Vic’s in various colors. While the I-5 posted speed is 60 in this area, most traffic is running up to about 5-7 over. The WSP is looking for those doing 10+ over the limit and the unmarked cars look for the "road rage" drivers who are tailgating and swerving across all lanes while doing 10-15 over the limit. There are usually no warning tickets given, you get hit for the speed as displayed on the gun.
