US Highway 95 near City Limit Sign

About 3 1/2 miles south of the actual town, on US 95, is a "City Limits" sign. The town itself is so obviously well in the distance, and your surrounding area so completely barren, that your first reaction is that the sign is some kind of joke. Then—the Speed Limit 25 sign appears. You now have 0.5 seconds to react, by slamming on your brakes or throwing out an anchor. Otherwise—be prepared for an encounter with a grinning cop, who has been waiting just over a little rise (with all his lights off, if it’s at night). If you examine this portion of the road and the placements of the signs, it becomes evident that those placements were carefully selected for maximum deception.

On April 28, 2012 I received a Citation (cite number and most everything else is illegible) for exceeding the posted speed limit on Highway 95, in the rural area approximately 2 -3 miles east of Hawthorne. I was cited for going 40 mph in the posted 35 mph zone. This speed zone was set in a 70 mph rural corridor, with no visable reason for such a speed reduction. The NVDOT reports that “there exists no record of any speed study for US95, 2-3 miles east of Hawthorne”. In other words a speed study in the subject area has never been done. The State of Nevada has adopted the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) which gives standards and guidelines for establishing speed limits on State highways. I believe that the speed limit of 35 mph was originally arbitrarily set in this 70 mph corridor which is inappropriate and definitely a speed trap.
