Strathmore, Alberta Speed Traps
Highway 1
Town Police and RCMP sit on Highway 1 Westbound on the side of the road with the trunk of the rear car up, making it look like a broken down vehicle. Eastbound they hide behind some trees. It is a 60 km/h zone and EVERYBODY speeds through there.
Trans Canada (Hwy 1) and anywhere within town limits
The speed limit on the highway drops from 110km/h to 60 km/h in Strathmore. (there are two traffic lights).80km/h would be safe and more realistic but wouldn’t generate as much revenue. Traps are often set up just inside the speed limit signs nabbing people travelling into and out of town en route to points east or west. (not much to see or do in Strathmore).
Toward the town’s outer limits in all other directions (where the roads are straight, visibility is unlimited, and population is almost non-existent) the limit remains at 60km/h, about 20- 30km/h below what is reasonable. Many police-force hours are spent here, ostensibly to "keep us safe".
This is a small town with a relatively low crime rate, which = cops with too much time on their hands. Care to take a guess where they spend a large percentage of this time?
