Thought I would update for 2014 so people know this is still here. Driving back to NM from Phoenix last year, my fiance got cited for not dropping 10 MPH while going down a mountain. I saw the flash, checked the speedometer, and she definitely was “in the wrong” according to the laws of speed traps. This year I was driving us to Phoenix (going west), and had the same thing happen that direction.

I should emphasize that I am not a speeder. I’m a very conservative driver from the South (where speeding is notoriously enforced) and pay close attention to speed limits. Anyone who thinks these citations are results of irresponsible driving is mistaken. It’s a rigged system that you could maybe beat if you’re expecting it, but probably almost impossible to beat if you’re driving like you do anywhere else in the country.

I received a ticket in the mail for over $200.00 in June 2012 for going 13 miles over the speed limit in Star Valley. I am from Colorado so I just ignored the ticket. It is now February 2013 and I have never heard anymore from them. My advise to out of state drivers is throw the ticket in the trash.

Both East and West Approaches

I agree with what the other commentator’s say: Bottom of a hill from either direction, sudden drop in speed with no warning, This is a classic way of raising money.

Star Valley West Approach

West Ande East approach to the town. Steep hill into town both directions. Camera right by 45 mph speed signs. No chance to go at this speed without applying brakes.

I drove through Star Valley (sorry, don’t even remember the town) 10 days ago. Yesterday, I received a $210 (that alone is a joke) ticket claiming I was driving 59 mph (like everyone else) in a 45mph zone. I live in Minnesota. I was driving from Phoenix to New Mexico that day. All I remember is that several small towns post 45 mph speed signs shortly after a 55 mph speed sign, which is shortly after the 70mph speed limit. This approach was from a steep hill. Without aggressively applying the brakes, it is impossible to go from 70 mph to 45 mph at the point that the 45mph sign is located. I suspected a speed trap after receiving the ticket and verified it by going to this website. It will be a cold day in h*ll before I pay this fine and I’ll never go through this town again.

After spending quite a bit of time on the internet, I determined that speeding fines are a large portion of the revenue this town of 1500+ depends on.
