Duncan, British Columbia Speed Traps
TCH Between Duncan and Chemainus
Cop in a gray unmarked SUV constantly cruises the TCH picking off drivers doing 90+ in the (ridiculous) 80kmph zone just north of Herd Road… usually just looking for the easy crap, no seat belts etc. These guys are really really ‘busy’, the office in Duncan is understaffed, so fight the ticket; never never pay as they often don’t have the time show up in court to ‘swear evidence’.
Berkie’s Corner-Cowichan Lake Road at Oak/Carriage Pub
Ghost Car hides in alley between Oak & Carriage Pub and corner store, just before you hit the round-about. Sometimes they have an officer stationed behind road sign in between two lanes who will step out and pull you over. They must think they can get speeders, drunk drivers and seatbelt checks all in one.
Highway between Duncan and Victoria
At any time of day the RCMP hides on side streets and picks you off as you come around corners. You only see them after it’s too late.
Island Highway, northbound, just before the "Silver Bridge".
As the northbound Island Highway approaches Duncan, the speed limit drops from 80 KPH to 60KPH. You pass one traffic light (Allenby Rd?), then the road curves to the right, limit drops to 50KPH and there’s another light at Boys Rd, just before the "Silver Bridge". Immediately after the light is a pull-off area for a bus stop. This is where the trap is set. Typical traffic speed is just under 80 KPH, if the lights are green and you don’t see the cop until it’s too late … the road curves to the right between the lights and as you come ’round, the cop will have the radar aimed right at the two lanes and by that time you’re in sight and in range. I’ve only seen the trap here in the summer, in the afternoon. It’s a good place to slow down anyway, there’s usually people jaywalking across the highway between the bridge and the next light.
