Swartz Bay, British Columbia Speed Traps
State Highway 17 near BC Ferry Terminal
Approaching the Swartz Bay BC Ferry Terminal, the speed limit is (according to the officer) 50kph after having been 80-90 kph just prior. The opposing traffic at this point has an 80khp limit. Just over the crest of the hill, officers (there were two officers working this trap while I was there) run out in the middle of the hwy and wave "offenders" onto the shoulder to get their "vehicle use tax". The officer states it is due to safety — if safety is an issue at this point, why are they running onto the hwy??? Since this is a frequent hwy used by people returning to the mainland or the states (like me), there is little opportunity for the ticket to be challenged. Just another tax…
