Susanville, California Speed Traps
Highway 36 southbound from Susanville, before 395 transition
when you leave Susanville traveling south, you may feel like you are ready to go 65 like the rest of 395, but the transition is actually about 2 miles further south. The CHP will hide on the side of 36 (at night and in the mornings with all of their lights out!) and grab anyone exceeding 60. Think about it, you are doing 70 mph in what you think is a 65 mph zone and you get ticketed for doing 15 or more mores over the posted (almost invisible signs in darkness) speed limit, landing you the extra big $$$$. Be very careful in both directions of this speed trap.
Susanville west on hwy 36 to hwy 44
The California Highway Patrol do heavy radar work on hwy 36 from Susanville Ca west to hwy 44 and beyond. The posted speed limit is 55 mph and anything over 60 mph will bring a ticket in this 15 mile area of California hwy 36 on a daily basis.
Main Street near Johnsonville Road
Susanville speed limits are well posted and not unreasonable, however the enforcement of the speed limits on the south side of town are heavy handed. Look for Susanville police to sit in the Safeway parking lot or along the side streets from where Highway 36 changes from 55 mph to about 1 1/2 miles into town where the speed limits is 30 mph. I ride an early morning bus in this zone and see them ticket speeders almost daily.
