Claremont, New Hampshire Speed Traps

Where washington street ends and turns 50mph. State Police sit in the dirt entryway at the begining of the ATV (super highway). They stand out of their cruisers and pull you over. If your heading out of Claremont to Newport you can’t see them.

Right on the Claremont/Newport town line is a turn-around used by school buses. It is deep enough that police cars are not easily seen, especially when coming from Claremont. It is at the top of a truck lane where cars tend to pick up speed to pass other vehicles. Both Newport & Claremont police use the area.

Heading north on 12a, about 2 miles before intersection rt. 12 near ascutney, vt, you will be at the top of a hill near some farms entering an area that is more wooded. As you descend the hill the speed limit becomes 40 mph (I actually don’t recall seeing this limit posted and suspect if it were posted, it may have been pretty far back). I notice locals are often suspicious of cars behind them, perhaps worried they are police. The police estimated I was going 70, exactly the speed necessary for a mandatory court date but dropped it to 65 so that I would not challenge it, telling me the judge may up the fine to almost $1000 if I do. Apparently I was getting a break, but I suspect he was trying to keep me from going to court.

Cruiser is parked beside the road in a hard place to see between 3pm and 6pm. Always on the east side of the road.

Cruiser parks across the street from advanced recycling. This street is patroled alot also. Speed limit used to be 50mph now it is 35mph.
