Rangely, Colorado Speed Traps
Kennedy Avenue and Highway 64
Be aware as you are entering the Town of Rangely, CO from the East on Highway 64. The speed decreased from 65, 55, 45 then to 30. The local police and county deputies hover around the intersection of Kennedy and Highway 64. It is steep incline coming into town with a steep drop off as you
start down the Main Street. They sit just on the downhill side as you enter town. They will sit on either side of the road. The speed drops to 30 mph right at the top of the hill and you are not careful you gain speed going down the hill. The joke around town is that you can rob the bank just don’t speed as you leave. These guys have nothing better to do.
Between MM 44 and 46 on CO 139
Heading north on 139 the speed limit goes from 65mph to 45 mph just past MM 44 for a right hand corner but stays 45 for about 1 1/2 miles, most of it straight road with only a couple of rarely used access roads. At the north end of this stretch is a curve with a county road to the west then the speed limit goes back to 55 mph. This should be 55 mph all the way through with the corners marked with 45 mph advisories. Truly a speed trap.
East end of town on Highway 64
Speed limit in the town is 45mph. As you leave the town on Highway 64 heading east you descend down a steep hill with a 55mph sign clearly visible ahead. The tendency is not to brake on this hill because of this sign and the fact that the town has been cleared and no other access road leading into highway 64. The police sit in the 55mph zone on the north side of the road using radar on oncoming traffic just before it leaves the 45mph zone. I was well past the 55mph sign when pulled over. I believe the radar speed was also fudged by about 4-5 mph.
