Rico, Colorado Speed Traps
Just inside the town limits.
As you approach Rico, e.g. from the south on Highway 145, from Mancos to Tellyouluride, the speed limit drops from 65 to 45 for a way. Just before you enter the town of Rico (or what’s left of if) the speed limit abruptly drops to 30 MPH. If you are admiring the Aspen, as we were, and not watching the speed limit signs, you might miss the white Colorado sign that says: “Speed Limit 30 – Local Ordinance Strictly Enforced.” Rico has a very wide main street, very short… with little to make you slow down or stop. The minute you drive into the very abbreviated town, as I did, the “Marshall will be clocking you.” I saw the second 30 MPH speed limit sign too late. There were no cars or people on the street. So, it’s a total set-up. You can see that Rico, which means “Rich” in Spanish, has fallen far from the gold-rush days. It’s only visible means of support is the speed trap.
State Highway 145 near Main Street
8 AM on Sunday morning during ski season. Rico is on road to Telluride, a popular Colorado ski area I was traveling 44 mph when limit changed to 30 upon entering town. No cars on main street except for local police man. Cost $65 and 1 point. I have not had a moving violation in 20 years.
