Gainesville, Florida Speed Traps
SW 42nd Street near SW 20th Street
Sitting between Archer Road and SW 20th St (the road that runs from behind Target / Albertsons and Butler Plaza) cops often park in the car wash or other side streets to try to catch speeders. The speed limit goes from 45mph to 30 approaching SW 20th. Have seen lots of police handing out tickets on my way home from work in late evening hours.
Archer Road near Center Drive
Officer sits in marked car/truck in median radaring east bound traffic. This is shortly after speed limits drops from 45 to 35.
SW 91 Street near SW 8th Avenue
Deputies on motorcycles, hiding behind shrubbery near driveways. Speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph, even though the intersecting roads (8th Ave. and 24th Ave.) are 40 mph.
SW 8th Avenue near Between Tower Rd and 91st Street
Deputy drives an unmarked black Mercury Marquis. I got a ticket for going 45 in a 30, but I checked later and saw that it’s a 40 mph road. Deputy gave a lot of misinformation about traffic school and contesting the ticket.
University Avenue near NW 32nd Street
Students beware. This area is a cash crop for the police.
The trap is for westbound travelers on University Ave. They will nail you as to come over the top of the hill that you travel down prior to intersecting with 34th St. Almost always motorcycle officers and almost always a ticket. Your detector will do you no good as there is always a false signal bouncing around the area. Thanks to the tree trimmings for the 2007 Hurricane season, you have a better chance of seeing the cop prior to getting beamed, but don’t count on it.
