Between Belmont and Wellsville on Rt. 19
Belmont is the Allegany County Seat, where this roadway is located. This automatically means "Patrol Cars" and these come in three varieties (actually 4 if you count the NYS Environmental Conservation Police patrol vehicles that are also in the area frequently): Belmont Town Police, Allegany County Sheriff, and NYS Police Troppers. TRIPLE WHAMMY. When leaving Belmont going South on Rt. 19, there is about a 2 mile piece of road that goes from 30 to 40 or 45. After this, it rises to 55 for a while until you reach Scio. The speed limit in Scio is 30 (going down from 55) and there is ample warning of this with "Speed Zone Ahead" signs. After this, though there is a 4.5 mile stretch of highway that for about the first 3/4 mile is 55, the is reduced to 45 the the remainder of the trip between Scio and Wellsville. The housing/ business "density" is LOW LOW LOW and even though it is a 2-lane road, it is not in the least bit dangerous or hazardous to navigate at all. It is simply there to get you frustrated enough to ignore the 45 MPH limit and get caught. There are not real spots to look for cops, just DON’T speed on this roadway. The chances of getting nailed by any one of the aforementioned varieties of patrol car, now with the addition of Wellsville local police as you approach that community are too great. Don’t risk it. What you can risk if you are a resident is a challenge to this ridiculously long 45 MPH speed zone that was obviously placed there to gather funding for a dying community.
