Bethel, New York Speed Traps
State Highway 17 near State Route 55
Town Constables, as well as County Sheriffs, and NYS State Police sit within the 40mph zone in White Lake. They commonly like to sit by the church, or next to the firehouse. When it says 40 in White Lake, you want to be doing 38!
State Route 17 B near State Route 35 North
Along Rte 17B approximately halfway between Monticello and Cochecton. A stretch of road for a mile or two where the speed limit drops from 55 to 40 MPH. This speed zone flanks the south side of a lake so the increased vacation traffic during the summer months probably warrants a reduced speed. However, enforcement is frequent. My particular ticket was a trumped up charge, based on the placing of construction zone signs but this is presumably a temporary situation. Nearly everyone who attended court the night I was there was offered the opportunity to plead guilty to a parking violation. This town appears to make a significant amount of money from traffic enforcement.
17b – route 55 junction
Turns from 55 to 40 in speed zone for no reason.
Lots of route 55 signs that are confusing with 55 speed limit signs. Perfect hill to coast at 68mph.
