Cornwall, New York Speed Traps
State Route 9W- northbound near Willow Avenue
The Cops sit way back into the trees by Willow Avenue entrance ramp to 9W northbound. You can’t see them during the late night/early morning hours
State Route Rt 9W near State Route
Town of Cornwall Police wait at base of Storm King Mountain, as cars have difficulty slowing down on down slope as you enter town of Cornwall on Rt 9W. There are no speed markers as you drive through mountainous area, so it’s hard to gauge how fast you might actually be going.
State Highway 9W near St Lukes Cornwall Hospital
Police sit just before the overpass to the north of the hospital. They back themselves in among the trees. The speed limit is 45 but everyone coming off Storm King Mtn does 55 or above.
Route 9W northbound, just past the bottom of Storm King Mountain
Either right at the bottom of the long Storm King downhill, town radar unit off in muddy pulloff area, or–more typically–about a quarter mile farther northbound, to the right of a long, flat straight. Usually town but often State Troopers.
On Route 9W both north and southbound
I’ve only seen town cruisers running these traps. One is halfway down Storm King Mountain, the cruiser sits on a side road just past the sign, "Storm King School" and shoots uphill at cars that, unless they’re dragging the brakes, are inevitably going over the 55-mph limit. The other is about a quarter mile farther downhill, on the southbound (uphill) side of 9W, parked in a very small side road. This cruiser can shoot both uphill- and downhill-bound cars and will be virtually invisible particularly to the downhill (northbound) cars.
