Olean, New York Speed Traps
US Highway 81 near south of the duty free shop
Highway 81 runs south from the Canadian border to Syracuse, Ny. The highway has a speed limit of 65 miles per hour. After we passed the Duty Free shop and proceeded for about ten minutes of driving, we were stopped by a State Patrol car. The officer said we were doing 67 in a40 mph zone. We never saw the 40mph sign and question where it was on a major highway
Route 417 east out of the city, at the city line (tile plant)
Olean city police sit in the American Tile plant parking lot, looking west for vehicles coming over a hill crest. It is a four lane roadway, but the speed limit is 30 in the city. Adding to the misery is a right lane merge that must be made before getting to the bottom of the hill – this is where they catch you, as you accelerate to get into the left lane! (NOTE: I defended a ticket hear with photographic evidence that the deputy did not have a clear sight of my vehicle, due to trees and signs until I would have made the merge. He guessed that I was speeding, and likely didn’t expect that I would challenge the ticket – ALWAYS challenge a ticket!)
