Saint Matthews, South Carolina Speed Traps

SC Hwy Patrol is known to be sitting in the median on Hwy 601 btween St Matthews and Orangeburg. I was given a warning for one mile over the speed limit just because the Hwy Patrolman slowed down while in front of me and I went around him. Watch out they are ridiculous here on this highway

Revenue enhancement opportunities galore for the Town of St. Matthews and SC Highway Patrol in the St. Matthews work zone on US 601. As soon as the signs went up with work zone fine notices, they were out there, hard at work, to rake in the extra dough. I wonder if they schedule construction to meet traffic needs, or when these towns have budget crunches, cuz they’re making a killing out there!

St. Matthews has a very long 30 mph speed limit where such a speed is only necessary for the short business district. The speed limits changes from 55 to 30 mph. Few motorists decelerate quickly enough to get under 40 upon coming into town. Upon leaving town the tendency is to speed up in the long 30 mph zone. The town police cars are camped in hiding with the radars fixed on the 30 mph signs. They give "careless driving" citations and fines of $100 if 10 mph over limits which is not reported to the state nor the insurance companies. An officer told me had made eight such citations in a two hour period.
