N Gilbert Road between Thomas & Beeline
This one really gets me fired up. They recently completed improvements to North Gilbert Road which upgraded from a narrow 2 lane road to a widely separated 4 lane road. Between Thomas & the Beeline Highway, there are no intersections, no driveways, no homes or businesses, just flat desert road. But for some incomprehensible reason, after making the road safer and wider, they reduced the speed limit from 50mph to 45mph. To add insult to injury, this now appears to be a common spot for a speed trap. They figure everyone is used to going 50mph on this stretch, and now that it is wider, it is even easier to break the new 45mph limit. Cops will wait for southbound traffic just south of the bridge north of Thomas so you can’t see them until it’s too late. Granted, this is an out-of-the-way corner of Mesa, but it is part of a popular commuter shortcut, making this an effective speed trap.
