Antiquated 20 MPH zone. Decades ago had small children in area but now even their houses are gone. Plenty of weeds along roadside to hide patrol car!

You are caught going downhill on a nice wide mountain interstate. You cannot see the police car as you are picking up speed going downhill. The posted limit is 50mph on the TN side, which is the side you are driving down the hill. You are coming from the NC side with a posted speed limit of 60mph. The fine is steep!

Tenn.HP sets up under overpass at Flag Pond Road. However, can be anywhere between NC State Line and Erwin. Posted speed limit is 55 from state line to about 5 miles east of Erwin. Signs warn of speed limit change. HP sets up (East) in curve just past where the speed limit drops. Drivers use caution!

Highway 23 heading north from North Carolina to Erwin, TN

Erwin, TennesseeSep 26, 20020 Comments

Everyone from the area knows to slow down coming down out of the TN/NC mountains. It is the reckless or out-of-staters that get caught coming down the mountain too fast. The speed is 55 mph down this steep incline. The highway patrol graciously awaits the unsuspecting traveler who allows the downward trajectory to propel his/her vehicle to a "naughty" speed above the laid-back 55 mph that seems to reflect the the laid-backness of the locals. Most of the traffic violators in the courtroom the day I was there had gotten their tickets in the same exact location. Travelers beware!
