Chincoteague, Virginia Speed Traps
Just past main Street inbound to Chicoteague Island
When you’re driving to Chicoteague Island (wild horses are a big attraction there) you’ll take Chicoteague Road into the island where the speed limit is 55. Once you get into town and pass Main Street the next posted speed limit sign is 25 with a police car conveniently stationed across the street with a radar gun to get you just as you can slam on the breaks and will pull you over before the roundabout. Upon rechecking the signs on the way out of town, there were in fact no incremental speed limit signs posted and as I was paying my ticket online I saw that there were 10 other people who got very similar tickets (40+ in a 25) issued on the same day by the same officer.
The new bridge into Chincoteague
Speed limit on the new bridge to the island between the causeway (route 175)and the intersection at Main St. and Maddox Blvd. is 25 mph (as it is on all the roads on the island). Slow down to 25 mph as you approach the bridge proper from the causeway (causeway speed is 55 mph). Watch for police on Marsh Island spur. Many tourists anxious to get on the island get nabbed and unfortunately start their vacation with a big fat fine.
(Word of advice: If you’re driving a camper or trailer, watch out for the VERY SHARP right turn off the bridge onto Main St.)
Maddox Boulevard
Uncongested open road with ridiculously low speed limits and a bridge so you can get nailed coming down the bridge. Town known as a "tourist trap" with DA office and courts unwilling to speak to you about pleading to lower speed, etc.
