Port Royal, Virginia Speed Traps
Intersection of 301 and 17, near King George county line
As soon as you come over the bridge from King County into Caroline county and are in Port Royal, the speed drops from 45 to 25 and there is always a cop sitting at the bottom of the bridge waiting to hand out tickets.
State Highway 301 near Between Rt. 17 and Rappahannoc River
Speed limit drops from 45 to 35 for a two blocks just before the bridge.
State Route 301/17
I am from Port Royal, and have traveled those roads for years. The Essex portion is almost always covered by police, but the stretch between Port Royal and Fredericksburg of 17 is two lane, and I have NEVER seen a cop checking speeders (i went to HS in Fredericksburg, traveled the road 2-4 times a day) and they hardly ever travel the road. That stretch of 17 is rural, and the people that know it are crazy. Now 301 between Port Royal and Bowling Green there is sometimes a cop at the top of the very first hill, but almost always right before the prison, and usually right after. The rest of the way is generally clear although occasionally you may find one, generally i don’t do more than 64 (its a 55) but they usually will pull an out of state person first. Between bowling green and I-95 I have seen a cop in just about every single crossover. Especially the one after the Kingdom Hall (going south), the second(?) one after the industrial park (going north). Basically the whole road is tough, just be careful, especially if you are from out of state.
US Highway 17 near between Tappahannock
Leaving Port Royal on highway 17 between Tappahannock.
Divided road with 2 lanes going south and 2 going north. Additional 4 lanes for shoulder along with guardrails, looks like an interstate hwy. which is 65. No signs visible
and a State Police parked behind bushes. Nothing but corn fields and forest for about 5 miles. Speed of 55 is too low
for this stretch of road. NICE MONEY MAKER for Essex Court!
State Highway 301, North of Route 17
301 South speed limit is 55 MPH North of the Rappahannock. Crossing over the bridge going down hill the speed limit drops to 45 MPH and within 100 Yards drops to 35MPH within small village!! State Troopers will be at south end of the bridge since high bridge obstructs view of road south. Expect to be ticketed for "reckless driving" if speed is not checked immediatedly. Highway at this point is a four lane divided highway. Assume that enforcement Northbound is just as strict.
